With longer days and warmer weather, it’s easier to get outside (if it’s not too hot), stay active, and adopt habits that make you feel your best. These summer wellness tips to guarantee you enjoy a healthy and happy summer.
Essential Summer Wellness Tips
I love summer. It’s my favourite season, even living in one of the hotter states of Australia. Sure, some days are disgustingly hot and humid but there’s something so exciting about summer days and the potential for adventures. I find it much easier to stick with good habits than winter wellness, but that’s not the case for everyone.

If you dread the summer season or you simply want to make sure you’re taking great care of yourself, these summer wellbeing tips are for you!
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Staying hydrated is essential, especially in the summer heat. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day – it’s recommended around 2.1 litres for women.
Carry a reusable water bottle with you so you’re always prepared for hydration. Drink less dehydrating liquids like coffee or alcohol and skip the sugary drinks entirely.
If you find it hard to get your recommended daily water intake, infuse your water with fresh fruits like lemon, cucumber, or berries for a refreshing twist. Proper hydration helps keep your skin glowing, energy levels up, and body functioning optimally.
2. Protect Your Skin
Summer sun can be harsh on your skin, so it’s essential to protect it. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
Don’t forget to protect your lips with an SPF lip balm and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your face.
I always use a daily moisturiser with SPF50+ in the morning and this is a great starting point if you’re looking for a lazy girl skincare routine. Don’t rely just on that though, if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.
3. Embrace Light and Fresh Foods
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy light and fresh foods. Incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet, such as watermelon, berries, cucumbers, and leafy greens. These foods are hydrating and packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
Try creating vibrant salads, smoothies, and crunchy veggie side dishes alongside your Summer BBQs to keep meals interesting and nutritious.
4. Stay Active and Outdoors
Take advantage of the beautiful weather by staying active outside. Go for morning jogs before the heat kicks in, evening walks, swimming, surfing, kayaking, or hiking through the mountains. These outdoor activities are great for both your physical health and mental well-being.
Tip: I love aqua aerobics during summer too. It’s not just for your nan! It’s a great low-impact workout in the water.
5. Get Enough Sleep
With longer daylight hours and a full social schedule, it can be tempting to stay up later. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is important for your health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
Establish a calming bedtime routine, such as reading a book or journaling with these nighttime journal prompts or a screen-free break, to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.
6. Don’t Skip The Skincare
Summer skincare should be all about hydration and protection. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated without feeling greasy. Incorporate antioxidants like vitamin C serum in your skincare routine to protect against sun damage and enhance radiance.
Don’t forget to exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and keep your skin smooth and beach-ready!
7. Wear Breathable Fabrics
Opt for light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to keep cool and comfortable during hot summer days. Loose-fitting clothes help you stay cool and prevent skin irritation and rashes caused by sweat. Definitely skip the synthetic polyester fabrics that make you sweat. Ick!
Summer is the perfect time to wear those cute sundresses that were neglected through summer, pretty skirts, and floaty tops. And don’t forget the adorable strappy sandals to finish the look.
8. Make Time for Self-Care
Summer is a wonderful time to focus on self-care. Set aside time each week for activities that rejuvenate you. A relaxing bath with some bath salts, reading a good book in your backyard hammock, laps of the local pool, or making those yummy green smoothies you love.
Here are some ideas for getting more self-care into your summer:
9. Explore New Hobbies
Use the extra daylight to explore new hobbies. Join a local community hobby group and make new friends. Try a new sport or outdoor activity. Ask friends what hobbies they do and if you can join in or just pull out your old faithful hobby supplies and give them some long overdue love by trying something new with them.
Trying something new can boost your confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment.
10. Connect with Nature
Spending time in nature has numerous health benefits, including reducing stress and improving mood. Plan regular outings to the beach, forest, or local parks. Even a simple picnic or a walk in the garden can help you feel more connected and grounded.
Tip: Eat your dinner on a picnic rug in the backyard with your partner for an impromptu date night amongst nature.
11. Stay Socially Connected
Summer is a great time to strengthen social connections. Plan get-togethers with friends and family, such as a barbecue, picnic, or beach day. Social interactions are needed for emotional well-being and can create lasting summer memories.
12. Listen to Your Body
Pay attention to your body’s signals and respond to its needs. If you feel tired, take a rest. If you feel energized, go for a run or dance around your living room. Listening to your body helps you maintain balance and avoid burnout.
This means also paying attention to anything out of the ordinary too. You should be looking for these things all year round, but in case you’ve been hoping they will go away, make an effort to get a check up and sort out any health concerns you have.
Never sleep on these things – so many health issues can be prevented or minimised if you get them early!
13. Protect Your Eyes
Protecting your eyes from UV rays is just as important as protecting your skin. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. This will help prevent eye damage and reduce the risk of cataracts. A wide-brimmed hat or a cap is also helpful for keeping your eyes protected from the sun.
Plus nobody wants those annoying eye wrinkles too early in life from squinting too much!
14. Keep Cool
Find ways to stay cool during the hottest parts of the day. Stay indoors or seek shade between 10 AM and 2 PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Use fans or air conditioning if available, and take cool showers to regulate your body temperature.
Chilled drinks, ice blocks, face mists. All of these will help keep you cool and relaxed on the hottest summer days.
15. Create a Summer Playlist
Music can have a powerful impact on your mood. Create a summer playlist filled with your favourite upbeat songs and listen to them while lounging by the pool, driving to the beach, or working out. It also makes cleaning your house far more fun! Music can enhance your summer experiences and uplift your spirits.
