Overcoming 10 Common Barriers To Achieving Your Personal Goals
Are you looking for monthly goal ideas? Setting goals is an important process that helps us stay focused, motivated, and organised in both our personal and professional lives. While long-term goals provide a sense of direction, they can often feel daunting and overwhelming.
This is where setting monthly goals can help! Breaking your goals down into smaller, more manageable monthly tasks can make the process feel more achievable and far less intimidating.
In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of setting monthly goals and provide you with a variety of monthly goal ideas to inspire your own monthly goal-setting habit.
The Benefits of Setting Monthly Goals
Before we get right into goal planning, let’s first take a closer look at why monthly goals are a great strategy to help you achieve success.
Setting monthly goals also allows you to enjoy more immediate gratification from your hard work and effort, as well as helping you track progress towards your long-term vision.
There are many benefits to setting monthly goals, rather than focusing only on shorter or longer-term goals during your intentional goal-planning process.
- Increased Focus and Clarity – By defining specific objectives for the month, you can concentrate your efforts on meaningful tasks that move you closer to your long-term goals and help you avoid distractions.
- Enhanced Motivation and Productivity – When you set clear objectives, you have a target to work towards, which can fuel your drive to take action and accomplish tasks. This increased motivation translates into higher productivity levels as you strive to meet your monthly goals.
- Improved Time Management – Monthly goals require effective time management to ensure progress. By setting specific deadlines and allocating time for different tasks, you can prioritise activities, avoid procrastination, and make the most of your time. This leads to better time management skills.
- Easy Progress Tracking – Regularly reviewing your goals and tracking your progress allows you to stay on track, make necessary adjustments, and maintain momentum. This is much easier to track on a month-to-month basis, compared to tracking ‘big-picture’ annual goals.
- Boosted Self-Confidence – Achieving monthly goals boosts your self-confidence and belief in your abilities. Each milestone you accomplish helps to validate your efforts and skills, giving a quicker sense of gratification.
How to Set Monthly Goals That Are Effective
Okay, so we now know that monthly goal setting is helpful in many ways, but how can we make sure our specific monthly goals are effective and achievable?
If you’ve ever heard the term SMART Goals, this concept is perfectly applied to monthly goals. In fact, SMART goal planning should be part of all goal-setting habits!
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Based.
Here’s a closer look at how SMART goals can be applied to monthly goal setting:
- Specific – What do you want your goal to achieve? Be as detailed as possible in order to make sure your monthly goal is specific and well-defined. For example, instead of setting a general goal like “exercise more,” make it more specific by stating “exercise for 30 minutes, five times a week.”
- Measurable – How will you track your progress and measure your success? Set clear metrics or criteria that allow you to measure your progress. This could be tracking the number of workouts completed, the amount of income earned, or the number of pages read.
- Attainable – Is your goal realistically achievable given your resources, time, and capabilities? Consider your current circumstances and set goals that challenge you but are within reach. Avoid setting goals that are too far-fetched or beyond your control. So rather than set a monthly goal of losing 20kg, consider something within a healthy limit for your body, such as 3kg.
- Relevant – Does your goal align with your overall objectives and values? Ensure that your monthly goals are relevant to your long-term aspirations and contribute to your personal growth and well-being. For example, if your long-term goal is to become a successful artist, a relevant monthly goal could be to create 2 paintings per month.
- Time-Based – Are there any deadlines associated with your goal? Set clear deadlines and milestones that help you stay motivated and on track. This adds a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused and motivated. For example, set a goal to complete a specific task or reach a milestone within the next 30 days.

Reflect & Review Your Goals
By applying the SMART goal framework to your monthly goal setting, you increase the effectiveness and achievability of your goals.
It provides a structured approach that guides your decision-making and ensures your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. But it doesn’t guarantee you will achieve your goals!
Remember, goal setting is a dynamic process.
Regularly review and reassess your goals to make any necessary adjustments. Celebrate your accomplishments and use any setbacks or challenges as learning opportunities.
With a SMART goal-setting approach and a willingness to adapt, you can effectively set and achieve your monthly goals, bringing you closer to your desired outcomes and personal growth.
Additionally, consider breaking down your monthly goals into smaller, actionable steps. This allows you to make steady progress and maintain momentum throughout the month.
Create a plan or checklist of the tasks or actions required to achieve your goal and track your progress along the way.
Monthly Goal-Setting Example
If you’ve found yourself struggling to achieve your long-term annual goals in the past, that’s probably why you’ve found yourself here. Setting monthly goals is an effective way to stay on track and maximise your chances of success.
In many cases, it is most beneficial to set your monthly goals each month.
I do this on the last day of the month, preparing for the month ahead. However, sometimes you have an annual goal that you can break down into a monthly plan instead.
As a practical example, let’s say that your long-term goal is to save up $10,000 by the end of the year. To achieve this, you could set a monthly goal of saving $833 per month.
For another example, say you want to declutter each room of your house by the end of the year. You might create a monthly goal plan that looks something like this:
- Month 1: Declutter kitchen
- Month 2: Declutter bathrooms
- Month 3: Declutter clothing
- Month 4: Declutter bedrooms
- Month 5: Declutter garage
- Month 6: Declutter living spaces
- Month 7: Declutter toys
- Month 8: Declutter laundry
- Month 9: Declutter extra storage
- Month 10: Declutter home office
- Month 11: Declutter digital/photos
- Month 12: Declutter anywhere not yet covered
This plan still requires adjusting if you do happen to work ahead of schedule or fall behind, but if gives you a monthly focus area to keep you motivated.
